In my last diatribe, I bemoaned the inability of Democrats to win off-cycle elections, despite the globs of hubris, lies and ineptitude suppurating from the Right. Since then, Republicans have captured House seats in Georgia and South Carolina even though the party leadership conceded it is incapable of rescinding even one red cent of Obamacare’s taxes. Notwithstanding the GOP’s nationwide stranglehold, it appears the polity has, in less that a decade’s time, castellated the ACA into a fortress every bit as impenetrable as the Second Amendment.
Killing off millions of undesirable Americans (read: the impoverished, elderly and infirm) via health care reform, while expedient, is proving unexpectedly difficult to legislate. Unwilling to wait for Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to get his act together, Dr. Henry Bello took matters into his own hands. Bello brought an assault rifle into the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital and shot seven people before turning the gun on himself. Cheering Bello’s efforts, Republicans hailed the Soylent Green approach to cutting Medicaid and Social Security spending, even if it means harvesting their own. In a recent tweet, Nevada RNC Committeewoman Diana Orrock implored Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to forgo surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye and to “just fucking die already.”
I also warned last month that the incessant absolution of cops who gun down innocent passersby would lead to continued retribution against law enforcement. So it must come as no surprise that shortly after Minnesota Officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted in the brutal murder of Philando Castile, the NYPD’s Miosotis Familia was executed point blank as she filled out reports in the seat of a mobile command center. What I didn’t see coming were the complex iterations of this all too predictable cycle. The stereotypical roles (white cop, black victim) are becoming conflated: To wit: a black patrolman gunned down a white Samaritan in Minneapolis, St. Louis cops shot a black off duty officer assisting with an arrest, and a Baton Rouge officer wounded in a 2016 ambush is suing Black Lives Matter for inciting violence.
Under that rubric, it is conceivable, then, that the victims of anti-Islamic assaults (recall: Orlando, Brooklyn, and Virginia) could sue one Donald J. Trump for creating — between the travel ban and a litany of demonizing rhetoric — an atmosphere of hatred against Muslims. Not known for shying away from litigation, the president has, in the meantime, plenty of other problems to contend with.
To the satisfaction of absolutely no one, the Russia investigation continues to inch along, and it’s anyone’s guess whether Mr. Mueller can actually produce an indictment before we’re all vaporized by North Korean missiles. Iranian hegemony is seamlessly supplanting ISIS in both Syria and Iraq, while here at home, Illinois is about to follow Puerto Rico down the rabbit hole of bankruptcy. Of course, Mr. Trump remains blithely unconcerned about the trillion-ton iceberg that broke off the Antarctic shelf or the new China-Mexico trade deal because anything involving climate change or Latinos doing anything but raping blonde girls or washing dishes at Mar-a Lago is clearly fake news. But like the student loan crisis, it tends to become real when it impacts rich white men. One can only hope that by 2018 enough white folks will be digging for food stamps under their sofa cushions and cursing the President for promises unfulfilled. Conditions could, theoretically, become so ripe that even the Democrats couldn’t fuck it up.
